For teachers and parents, finding easy crafts for kids can be a pain - especially in the heat of Nagoya's summer. These crafts have been tested and loved by kids in preschools and primary schools throughout Japan and Australia. Plus, they only require a few recycled items or something from Daiso (100 Yen Shop).

The trickiest parts of learning a language are finding opportunities to use that language, and building confidence to speak freely. While English is a compulsory school subject in Japan, immersive contexts with opportunities to use English are hard to come by.
Apart from the odd Japanese sentence or word, it is encouraged that Second Family English (SFE) members interact in English. This is easier said than done when it comes to the youngest Japanese members. For them to speak, it takes trust, comfort, and ample opportunities to use language.

games and teamwork session - trust

11/5/2016

Comments

When we're not assisting families with lifestyles and language at their homes, we are busy creating events for families from different cultures to make friends.
Last Sunday we had a Games and Teamwork Session based on trust - every game had a trust element in which everyone had to rely on each other to accomplish the goals.

Learning through science

kids + corn flour = mess
This week in our Atsuta group English lesson, we created 'Corn Flour Yucky' - traditionally known as 'impossible slime'.
Everyone worked together to measure flour, add water, and mix. We soon discovered mixing was going to be a tricky task as the goop hardened with rigorous movement.
Onlookers joined in on the fun as we added more flour and water, crafted sticky balls, and even tried eating it!
Afterwards, we enjoyed munching on Australian chocolate-covered slice.
At Second Family English, we use hands-on fun and games to encourage language acquisition for all learning types.
Science experiments, cooking, building activities, ball games, and teamwork are a big part of our lessons as we study vocabulary, grammar, body language, culture, and social interaction.

Group lessons are held weekly, and are open to children of any age or nationality living in Nagoya.

Fruit and vegetables are expensive in Japan if bought from big-name supermarkets.
These fresh produce shops supply discounted fruit, vegetables, meat, and dairy products based on season instead of demand. This means cheaper prices, bulk produce, and a fresher variety of healthy food.
Find a bargain at one of these local stores located in Nagoya:
